SUMMARY:Monthly Member Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our September Monthly Member Meeting! We encourage everyone to join us. If you don’t have the Zoom link\, please contact secretary(at)vifpa.ca\nWe encourage everyone to participate and to bring forward their questions\, thoughts\, and ideas. \nThis month\, Tim Lindsay of Cantec will be discussing CAN/ULC-S536 Fire Alarm System documentation (see below for more information!). \nAGENDA \n\nIntroduction\nAdoption of Agenda\nAdoption of August Minutes\nFinancial Report – Tim Lindsay\, Treasurer\nTECH TALK (approx. 2:40 – 3:10 PM)\n“Most companies miss the often overlooked requirement for documentation of a fire alarm system when performing the annual inspection. Our company has gone to great lengths in the past to equip each site with the appropriate documentation especially if the site has not embraced the BC Fire Code with a Fire Safety Plan. Some of the required documentation in order to comply with S-536 may very well be contained in the FSP but even then does anybody check to see if that is in fact the case.CAN/ULC S-536-13 Section C-1 (The most important document in 536) Item D asks the technician of record to confirm that the required documentation is on site. The response is a simple yes or no. Annual Inspection Log Reports that are produced after an annual inspection should contain a tick in the “YES” box otherwise it should be recorded as a deficiency. \nSection 4.8 of 536 stipulates what documentation is required. A description of the system could be considered as the previous year’s annual inspection log report. Is it there onsite? \nSection 4.8 also stipulates that a sequence of operation is required to be onsite. Is it there? \nSection 4.8 also refers us to Appendix E for details of documentation. \nAppendix E5 Details the topics to be included for the sequence of operation including B Procedure for resetting\, silencing\, and acknowledging. It also requires identifying the function of EACH switch or push button as well as a number of other requirements. \nAppendix E10 Requires battery load calculations which are quite often overlooked by technicians. Battery Capacity tests\, readings\, and documentation are also a requirement of 536. \nAre all the companies that perform annual inspections complying with 536?”\nOld Business\nDuct Smoke Issues\nA brief additional discussion regarding pre-assembled 120vac duct detectors on fire dampers. There appears to be confusion as to whether or not these require connection to the fire alarm.\nNew Business\nBi-Directional Amplifiers\, the CREST System\, and Fire Alarm Panel Connections\nA discussion regarding multiple jurisdictional requirements for a relay that provides a summary alarm. Saanich sample will be presented\, with support from Sidney.\n\n

SUMMARY:Monthly Member Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this month’s Member Meeting! We encourage everyone to join us and participate. If you don’t have the Zoom link\, please contact secretary(at)vifpa.ca\nOur discussions this month include a Tech Talk on Duct Smoke Detector Issues\, hosted by Tim Lindsay (Cantec) and Murray Ender (Troy Life Safety)\, as well a a presentation from Prices Alarms/Telus about the recent transition and how it will affect your clients. \nAGENDA \n\nIntroduction\nAdoption of Agenda\nAdoption of July Minutes\nFinancial Report – Tim Lindsay\, Treasurer\nTECH TALK (approx. 2:40 – 3:10 PM) – Duct Smoke Issues\nIt has been identified that most haven’t been tested properly over the years and often didn’t work from day one. One of the primary reasons is due to improper placement in the first place\, which should be in the supply duct with an appropriately sized and positioned air sampling tube. You need a manometer — a device to measure pressures\, which commonly consists of a U-shaped tube of glass filled with some liquid — to do correct testing for air sampling. This Tech Talk will be led by Tim Lindsay or Cantec Fire Alarms and Murray Enders of Troy Life and Fire Safety.\nPrices Alarms Becomes Telus Custom Security Systems\nRandy Beres\, Director of Sales\, Western Region\, for Telus Custom Security Systems will join us to talk about the acquisition of Prices Alarms by Telus and the upgrade requirements for D-Vacs lines. We’ll be discussing how this corporate changeover will affect our life safety customers.\nCourt Cases We’re Watching\nThe Okotoks Premium Fire Owner is being sentenced (July 29th)\, so we can give an update on how this has evolved. Tim will also give an update on Prince George case and its certification.

If you don’t have the Zoom link\, please contact secretary(at)vifpa.ca \n\nThe Vancouver Island Fire Protection Association is inviting you to a scheduled Monthly Members Zoom meeting. This meeting is open to all members\, guests\, and others interested in the fire protection industry. If you do not have an invitation or link to the Zoom meeting\, just drop a note to secretary(at)vifpa.ca \nWe have an interesting topic pulled straight from the newspaper headlines: \nStill ‘unreasonable’ for Langford to permit building with no architect\, appeal court rules\nAppeal court denies Langford’s appeal of 2020 ruling on Hoffman Complex\nhttps://www.vicnews.com/news/still-unreasonable-for-langford-to-permit-building-with-no-architect-appeal-court-rules/ \nhttps://aibc.ca/2021/07/bc-court-of-appeal-confirms-langford-decision/ \nAnd a little further background reading…. with special attention to page 4 – 5.0 Alterations and Repairs to Buildings Requiring an Architect: \n5.2 In determining whether an architect is required under the Act on an alteration or repair\, the AIBC considers whether one or more of these issues are present in the proposed work: \n5.2.1 Substantial alteration or penetration of fire separations\, exiting systems or life safety features\, including number\, location or size of exits\, or alteration\, addition or deletion of stairs or ramps serving the building; \nhttps://aibc.ca/wp-content/uploads/files/2019/06/Bulletin-31-Buildings-Requiring-the-Services-of-an-Architect.pdf \nWhich raises the question for discussion: \nIs an architect required to be involved in a fire alarm upgrade\, despite what AHJ’s may require?\nOur full agenda will be: \nAGENDA \nIntroduction\nAdoption of Agenda\nAdoption of June 2021 Minutes\nFinance Report\nOld Business\n* If any…\nNew Business\n* Building Permits & AIBC Involvement
